Welcome to my blog!
This is my first post and this, is my first wild brown trout! I'll admit now that I am a novice. I'm in my early 50's and only just discovered fly fishing. I have not been an angler of any type until now.
Having just joined Errwood Fly Fishing Club to learn the basics for my first season, following my initial introduction at Ladybower, I discovered the Peak Passport Scheme. This was all down to a chance encounter with Andrew Heath from the Trent Rivers Trust in Field & Stream in Ashbourne. What a fantastic scheme, and all credit to Andrew for getting it to the this stage of its first full season. I have been following blogs such as Glen's and Woody's and reading all the trout magazines to learn as much as possible. These have filled my head with thoughts of stalking canny trout in the streams and rivers of my home area of the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District. I never thought I would have the opportunity to be able to actually do it, let alone afford it. To have access to beats on the Dove, Manifold and Hamps for as little as a fiver, well, my dreams will come true. So, this is it, my first wild brown trout. I saw it rise, I knew it was there. It ignored a few casts and then I watched it follow the fly, pause and then take it. How thrilling. If this is a taste of what its like - I want more, but crumbs, what a lot to learn, but also, what a lovely way of spending your time learning. My tackle on this occasion was a 6'6" Streamflex #3, a floating line with a 9' tapered leader and a size14 green Klink on the end. I lost my virginity on beat 6 of the Peak Passport scheme which is Windy Arbour Bridge on the Manifold, just south of Longnor.
Love the streams,
March Brown.
